In a perfect world we’d all have a goldilocks home, with “just right” sized rooms making decorating and furniture layouts easy. Unfortunetly, we’re not all that lucky. Designing a small cozy living room requires a thoughtful furniture plan and layout to keep the space feeling less “crowded and cluttered” and more “intimate and functional”.
For this article, I’ll walk through the best small cozy living room layout ideas, furniture placement tips, and mood board inspiration so that you can take your own small living room to the perfect level of cozy and beautiful.
Ideal Small Cozy Living Room Layouts
There are two layouts I think work best for small living rooms. They both create a cozy conversation area for 5 or more people, while also allowing for optional TV viewing.
The first layout feels more formal. It includes a comfortable sofa that sits 3, facing towards two accent chairs, and a rectangular coffee table about half the length of the sofa placed in the middle. If the room will include a TV for entertainment, simple add a narrow console behind the chairs.
The second layout has more of a informal lounge vibe. It’s especially good for larger families and people who really like to stretch out during rainy day Netflix binging marathons. Here you’ll see a sectional taking up a two walls, with the accent chair kitty-corner with a round coffee table. As with the more formal layout, place a console table against the empty wall for the TV.
There are some key elements shared by both layouts. Firstly, they both have large rugs that take up most of the space. This is a nifty way to trick the eye into seeing more area than there actually is. They also incorporate lightweight accent chairs that can be easily moved around the room for optimal versatility.
