Gray flooring was one of the most popular choices for new and remodeled homes a few years ago, and just like the dark cherry wood floors of the past, they can be really tricky to decorate with. If you’re lucky enough to choose, my advice would be to stick to more neutral brown wood floors for a timeless option, but most of us are stuck with the floors that were put in long before we stepped through the door.
Choosing the right rug to complement gray floors can be challenging. I’ve written about choosing paint colors that work with gray floors, given a quick rundown on how to create a color palette, and today I’m sharing some great rugs for homes with gray floors. I hope you find it helpful!
Why Rug Selection Matters With Gray Floors
Gray floors can feel sterile and cold. The ideal rug should:
Add warmth
Provide contrast or subtle harmony
Bring texture and depth
Balance cool undertones
A well-chosen rug not only transforms gray floors from stark to sophisticated, but can be a great tool in setting a color palette for your whole home.

Color Palettes That Complement Gray Floors
I have two tips for choosing rugs for warming up gray floors.
Choose a rug with a gray accent color AND
Warmer accents or background.
This allows the rug to speak to the floor, while also warming it up. Each rug above has a shade of gray in its color palette, and each one would be a fantastic jumping off point to create a warm, inviting and sophisticated color palette for your home.
Next week, I’ll be sharing a new color palette and mood board using one of these rugs. Until then, you may be interested in these articles:
